Faith Comes by Hearing

The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light.
And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow, a light has shined.
Matthew 4:16

Today, as we sit in our offices with stacks of bibles, commentaries, and devotions, at least 2000 languages are still without one word of Scripture. God has revealed His character, His plan, and His promises to us through His Word, but for more than 1.5 billion people around the world, access to reading or hearing about this God of love in a language they can understand is not yet possible.

We are thrilled to announce that this will change forever as we launch our new Bible translation project for the Taposa people of South Sudan in the new year.

After a decade of persevering, unconditional love, our national missionaries have laid a firm foundation of trust and respect, developing the relationships to make this new work possible. Preparations have been made for a translation team of tribal elders, educated youth, and outside language advisors to begin co-laboring on the Gospel of Luke.

Because the Taposa have no written history and no value for literacy, they rely on oral stories to pass down traditions and impart wisdom throughout the generations. This would make a written Bible translation totally inaccessible to most of the elders, who lead their communities and shape their entire culture.

Thankfully, through the tireless self-sacrifice of our missionary parents, God has been preparing a handful of discipled teenagers who are highly literate and devoted to serving Jesus with their education. After we create a written Taposa text of the book of Luke, these teens will read it to the elders, who will be recorded reciting the scriptures.

For the first time in history, the Taposa will have an audio Bible spoken in their own heart language. This new audio Bible will be put onto solar charged devices that can be carried around and listened to in hundreds of villages, home to some 250,000 Taposa people scattered throughout a vast unreached desert. As God’s Word breaks through the darkness, cultures and communities will be forever changed.

To complete this exciting new work, we will need to build a handful of rooms for the translation and recording project, along with a half-dozen huts to accommodate the translation team while they are working out in the village. The book of Luke will be our first priority, then we will begin translating hundreds of key stories in the Old Testament.
Our vision is to have the entire Bible translated in 10 years or less. For the first year, the estimated project cost of $25,000 will cover the equipment, salaries, and room and board for our team of 25 people.

The magnitude of this project is a new step of faith for us, so we ask you to stand with us and our translation team in constant prayer and financial partnership as we endeavor to bring God’s word to an unreached people group waiting to hear for the first time.

We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Voices rang out under the milky way as clouds of dust arose from the joyful stomping of barefooted villagers, once untouched by the Gospel.  I rejoiced to see the fulfillment of 20 years of prayer unfolding before me, as God quietly spoke to my heart: “As I promised Abraham, ‘Look toward heaven, and number the stars … So shall your offspring be.’ Trust Me and walk with Me and I will pour out my Spirit on this desert land.” In the neighboring villages of our discipleship program, many of the kids who came to us from the “Forgotten People” over a decade ago are now venturing out in hut to hut evangelism, sharing the love of God to the isolated communities they once lived in.

Marko, like many others, had been reluctant to send his son Lobai to our children’s home during its early years. When our African director, James Nyika, assured the resistant father that Lobai would be properly cared for and receive an education, Marko consented, unaware of the eternal impact this decision would have on his own life. When Lobai heard that his father recently fell ill, he and six other boys in our program returned to the village to pray over Marko. Amazed at the change in his now teen-aged son, Marko sat as Lobai led the boys in prayer over his feeble body. The love of God prevailed, compelling Lobai’s father to receive the Good News and give his life to Jesus.

After visiting with Marko, the boys began to collect firewood and invite other villagers to join them for prayer that evening. Curious bystanders gathered around the fire, as another of our boys, Lokwar, stood to welcome them in their native tongue. Seeing the boldness of their grown up children overflowing with God’s love and confidently worshiping in their own language, the people began sobbing with joy. The young wandering children they had once known were now young adults being powerfully used by the God of the universe.

As God’s Spirit continued to pour out on the village, another youth, Ariko, preached and invited all to come to Jesus, followed by a prayer of confession. Light pierced the darkness as fifteen men and sixty women came forward to receive the Lord around the glowing bonfire illuminating the night. What began with a small group of obedient young disciples has now become an established church, meeting several evenings a week to gather and worship the Creator of the stars above.

Lobai’s father Marko, who was among the first to receive Jesus, died one week after the boys prayed for him. Though his body did not recover from the sickness, he found true healing in the arms of his Savior. He will be followed by many from his village who can now enter eternity welcomed by their Heavenly Chief.

In the same way that Marko’s village was recently unreached, fifty percent of the world’s population still lives in areas with no access to the Gospel.  We exist to share the good news of Jesus Christ with those who have never had the chance to hear His name.

Thank you for your faithful prayers, love and support of Ends of the Earth Ministries!

God bless you,
Pastor Rob Douglass

The large acacia tree shaded myself and 15 native missionaries in South Sudan from the burning heat. I had spent the last three days training them in evangelism. After lunch, they were sent out to the surrounding unreached communities to put God’s Word into practice.

A small group of missionaries gathered the courage to approach the dilapidated concrete jail that still bore the shrapnel scars from Sudan’s recently ended war. To their surprise, the guards welcomed them to share “a message of hope” with the ten prisoners inside. The four guards and inmates listened intently as the missionaries spoke of man’s sin, God’s love and sacrifice through Jesus and the hope of reconciliation with the God who created them. All 14 men showed deep signs of remorse. The message had cut to their hearts. They nodded in agreement with one of the prisoners who stood and said, “We know we are sinners. We are in this place because of our guilt. If there is a God who loves us and can forgive us – we want this Jesus today!”

Our evangelists returned two days later to check on the prisoners. They found them and the guards showing great signs of a new found joy. The jailers had given the prisoners new clothes to wear. Two of the criminals who had their feet chained on their initial visit, were unbound and peaceful. The guards had witnessed such a difference in their character, that they had removed their chains.
